Polyurethane: the default for finished floors

Polyurethane treads bonded to a plastic core are the all-rounder. They carry more than rubber, roll easier than rubber, and do not leave marks on epoxy, sealed concrete, or tile. The tread also absorbs some vibration, so the cart is noticeably quieter than a hard-wheel cart. For a general shop cart, welding table, or stockroom truck on a floor you care about, start here. Where poly falls short is chemical and heat exposure: it is not the wheel for an oven line or a cart that sits in solvent.

Phenolic: highest capacity, lowest rolling effort

Phenolic is a hard, resin-based composite. It has the highest per-caster rating of the four in this size (1,000 lb on the 5" x 2"), the lowest rolling resistance, and resists oil, grease, and solvents. It also tolerates heat far better than polyurethane, which is why it shows up on oven carts, bakery racks, and tow lines. The trade-offs are noise and impact: a phenolic wheel transmits every crack and pebble into the cart, and a sharp impact can chip the tread. Keep it on reasonably smooth floors and away from loose debris.

Steel: durability first, floor last

A solid steel wheel is the choice when the environment will destroy anything softer — abrasive grit, high heat, sharp metal chips, or long service with no maintenance. Which caster wheel is best for epoxy or sealed concrete floors?
