| Rod | AWS | Joins / Base Metal | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| ER308L | A5.9 | 304 / 304L stainless | Low-carbon standard austenitic filler |
| ER309L | A5.9 | Dissimilar (SS ↔ carbon steel), 309 | High-alloy for dilution, buffer/overlay |
| ER316L | A5.9 | 316 / 316L stainless | Molybdenum-bearing; pitting/corrosion resistance |
All stainless TIG rods weld on 100% argon, DCEN (straight polarity), in 36" cut lengths. The “L” grades are low-carbon for corrosion resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What gas and polarity for stainless TIG?
Use 100% argon on DCEN (electrode-negative). That's standard for stainless GTAW with all three grades.
Which rod for 304 vs 316 vs dissimilar metals?
ER308L for 304/304L, ER316L for 316/316L and corrosive service, and ER309L for joining stainless to carbon steel or for overlay layers.
