Stainless - Stick Electrodes
Stainless steel stick electrodes (SMAW) from HYW Products in low-carbon E308L-16, E309L-16, and molybdenum-bearing E316L-16 (AWS A5.4). All three are rutile-coated (−16), all-position electrodes that run on AC or DC+ — pick the grade by the stainless base metal or joint. Common sizes 3/32", 1/8", 5/32".

| Electrode | AWS | Joins / Base Metal | Current / Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| E308L-16 | A5.4 | 304 / 304L stainless | AC or DC+ · all-position |
| E309L-16 | A5.4 | Dissimilar (SS ↔ carbon steel), 309 | AC or DC+ · all-position |
| E316L-16 | A5.4 | 316 / 316L stainless | AC or DC+ · all-position |
The “L” grades are low-carbon to resist intergranular corrosion. Keep stainless electrodes dry; redry per the manufacturer's guidelines if exposed to moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which stainless electrode for 304 vs 316?
E308L-16 for 304/304L, E316L-16 for 316/316L. E316L adds molybdenum for resistance to pitting and chloride corrosion.
What does the “−16” mean?
It's the coating/usability designation: a rutile (lime-titania) covering that runs on AC or DC+ in all positions, giving a smooth arc and easy slag removal.
