Order the wrong mix of casters for a cart, rack, or scaffold tower and you end up with a load that wanders, won't track straight, or can't be locked down safely on a ramp. The fix isn't a better wheel — it's the right combination of rigid, swivel, and locking-brake casters for how the load actually moves. Here's how to build a set that rolls straight, steers where you need it, and stays put when you park it.

The three caster types, in plain terms

Every caster on a cart or rack is one of three types, and each does a different job:

  • Rigid casters — the wheel only rolls forward and back in a fixed direction. It can't swivel. Rigid casters track straight and resist side-loading, which is why they're used for directional stability.
  • Swivel casters — the wheel rotates 360° around a vertical pivot, so it can turn and roll in any direction. Swivel casters give a cart maneuverability, letting you steer around corners and through tight aisles.
  • Swivel casters with a locking brake — a swivel caster with an added brake that locks the wheel, the swivel, or both, so the load stays put once it's positioned. How to combine them on a 4-caster set

Most carts, racks, and scaffold bases run on four casters, and the classic setup mixes types rather than using four of the same kind:

As a rule of thumb: if the load is climbed on, worked from, or left unattended even briefly — a scaffold tower is the clearest example — put locking brakes on at least two of the four casters, positioned diagonally opposite each other for the most even hold.

Matching load capacity to the job

How many locking casters do I need on a scaffold tower?

At minimum, two of the four casters should have locking brakes, positioned diagonally so the tower can't roll or twist once locked. Many shops run locking brakes on all four for maximum hold, especially on uneven floors.
