ER309L Stainless Steel TIG Welding Filler Rod is a high-chromium, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel filler rod engineered for dissimilar-metal joints and corrosion-resistant TIG (GTAW) welds. Supplied as straightened 36" (914 mm) cut lengths in 1/16", 3/32", and 1/8" diameters and 1, 2, 5, and 10 lb packs, it is the standard choice for joining stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steel and for first-layer overlay on carbon steel. Select your diameter and pack size above.

Key Features

  • High Cr/Ni (23.5% Cr / 13.5% Ni) deposit ideal for dissimilar-metal joints
  • Low-carbon (≤0.03% C) chemistry resists carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion
  • Excellent crack resistance when welding stainless to carbon or low-alloy steel
  • Smooth, stable arc with a bright, clean weld deposit
  • Straightened 36" cut lengths for consistent, easy handling

Ideal Applications

  • Joining 309/309L and dissimilar stainless-to-carbon steel joints
  • First-layer (buffer) overlay and cladding on carbon steel
  • Welding 304/304L where extra ferrite is beneficial
  • High-temperature service and heat-resistant fabrication
  • General stainless steel fabrication and repair

Available Sizes & Recommended Amperage

Diameter Recommended Amperage
1/16" (1.6 mm) × 36" 70 – 110 A
3/32" (2.4 mm) × 36" 100 – 160 A
1/8" (3.2 mm) × 36" 120 – 210 A

Recommended amperage ranges are general guidelines; optimal settings vary with base-metal thickness, joint design, tungsten selection, and welding position. Store filler rod in a dry location to prevent oxidation and ensure clean welds.
