Every stick electrode ships with two products in the box: the rod and its flux coating. The rod does not care about humidity. The coating does. What "hermetically sealed" means for a welding electrode

A hermetically sealed can is a steel can with a welded or crimped seam and a foil-lined lid that is sealed at the factory immediately after the electrodes leave the drying oven. No air exchange takes place until you open it. The rods inside are protected from ambient humidity for as long as the can sits on the shelf — months or years — because the coating has no path to the atmosphere.

Compare that with a cardboard box or shrink-wrapped bundle. Cardboard breathes and film leaks at the seams. Those packages are fine for moisture-tolerant coatings, but not for low-hydrogen work where the code requires controlled exposure.

Why moisture in the coating ruins low-hydrogen welds

Flux coatings are mineral and organic compounds bonded with silicates. Many of those compounds are hygroscopic — they pull water out of the air. When that water enters the arc it dissociates, and hydrogen dissolves into the molten weld pool. As the weld cools, trapped hydrogen collects at grain boundaries and stress concentrations, causing underbead cracking and delayed cracking that can appear hours or days after the weld looks fine.

E7018 exists specifically to avoid this. Cellulosic rods like E6010 and E6011 are the outliers. Their coatings rely on a small amount of moisture to generate the forceful, deep-penetrating arc they are known for. Over-drying them in a rod oven actually hurts performance. For those rods, the sealed can is about keeping the coating intact and clean during shipping and storage rather than about hydrogen control.

Applications where the seal is non-negotiable

Any weld governed by a structural or pressure code — AWS D1.1 structural steel, ASME pressure vessels and piping, bridge work, crane and lifting equipment, heavy-equipment repair on high-strength steel — typically requires low-hydrogen electrodes to be issued from a sealed container or a holding oven, with a documented exposure limit after opening. After opening: managing the clock

Frequently asked questions

How long do electrodes last in an unopened sealed can?

As long as the seal is intact, the coating is isolated from the atmosphere and the rods remain as dry as they were at the factory. Inspect the can for dents, rust or seam damage before trusting the seal on older stock.

Can I reseal a can after opening?

Pressing the lid back on keeps out dust but is not a hermetic seal. For low-hydrogen rods, use a heated rod oven for anything you do not use that shift.

Do E6010 and E6011 need a rod oven?

No. Cellulosic coatings need a little moisture to run properly, and oven-drying them degrades arc performance. Store them in a dry cabinet at room temperature.

Is a dented sealed can still good?

If the seam and lid seal are unbroken, yes. If the dent has cracked the seam or lifted the lid, treat the rods as exposed and redry low-hydrogen types before use.
