Scaffold Casters: Stem Size, Capacity & Brake Guide
Scaffold casters all look about the same in a photo — a wheel, a brake lever, and a round stem on top. But three details decide whether the set you order actually fits your tower and holds the load: stem size, load rating, and wheel diameter and tread. Get one wrong and you either can't install the caster or you've built an overloaded rolling platform.
Here are the three decisions in order, with the real specs from the HYW scaffold range so you can match a part to your frame in a couple of minutes.
What makes a scaffold caster different
A standard industrial caster mounts on a bolt-on top plate. A scaffold caster mounts on a round stem with a retaining pin that drops into the hollow leg of a scaffold frame or rolling rack. That's the defining difference, and it's why stem diameter is the first thing to check rather than an afterthought.
The second difference is the brake. Every caster in the HYW scaffold range uses a total-locking brake — it stops the wheel and the swivel at the same time. On a mobile tower that matters: a wheel-only brake still lets the caster pivot, which allows the frame to creep and shift under a worker. A total lock holds the frame square.
Step 1 — Match the stem
Measure the inside diameter of your scaffold leg, or pull an existing caster and measure its stem. Scaffold stems are not adjustable and they don't adapt, so this has to be exact.

Step 2 — Size the load rating
Load ratings on casters are per caster, not per set. Four 500 lb casters give a nominal 2,000 lb capacity — but floors are never perfectly flat, and on an uneven surface three casters can end up carrying nearly the whole load.
The standard shop rule of thumb is to divide your total rolling weight by three, not four, and buy for that number. So a tower plus tools plus two workers coming to 1,500 lb wants casters rated at roughly 500 lb each, not 375 lb. Add margin if the load is top-heavy, if the surface is rough, or if the platform gets moved while loaded.
Step 3 — Pick the wheel diameter and tread
Diameter controls what the caster can roll over; tread controls noise, floor marking, and how the wheel behaves on debris.
- 5" wheels — compact, lower overall height, best for lighter towers and racks where headroom or deck height matters.
- 6" wheels — the general-purpose size for most scaffold frames. Good balance of roll-over ability and height.
- 8" wheels — roll over thresholds, cords, and jobsite debris with much less effort. Choose these if the tower moves across rough or littered floors.
- Rubber on cast iron — durable on rough concrete, forgiving over grit, absorbs shock from cracks and expansion joints.
- Polyurethane — quieter and non-marking, and it carries the highest ratings in this range. The right choice on finished floors, tile, or sealed concrete.
- Polyurethane on cast iron — an iron core for strength with a poly tread for a quieter, floor-friendlier roll.

Fitment note
The 5" hard rubber tower caster fits Perry-style MFS and Bakers scaffolding. Otherwise, confirm stem diameter against your frame first — it's the one spec you can't work around.

What size stem do scaffold casters use?
Most standard steel scaffold frames take a 1-3/8" round stem with a retaining pin. Lighter towers and Bakers-style racks commonly use a 1" round stem. Measure before ordering — the stem is not adjustable.
How much weight can four scaffold casters hold?
Multiply the per-caster rating by four for the nominal figure, then design to about three-quarters of that. Uneven floors shift the load onto three casters, so the accepted practice is to divide total weight by three when selecting a rating.
Do I need a total-locking brake?
On any platform someone stands or works on, yes. A wheel-only brake still lets the caster swivel, which lets the frame creep. A total lock stops the wheel and the swivel together.
Polyurethane or rubber for scaffold casters?
Rubber on cast iron for rough concrete and jobsite floors. Polyurethane for finished floors where noise and marking matter — it also carries the highest capacities in this range, up to 950 lb per caster.
Can I mix wheel sizes on one frame?
No. Use four identical casters so the deck stays level and the load is shared evenly across all four corners.
Safety: Never exceed a caster's rated capacity, and rate the set for everything on the platform — workers, tools, and materials. Engage all brakes before anyone climbs, and never move a tower with a person on it. Keep stems and pins clean and fully engaged, and inspect wheels and brakes before each use.
