Solid MIG Wire vs Flux-Cored Wire: How to Choose
Almost every mild-steel welding job starts with the same question: run solid MIG wire, or run flux-cored? Both lay down 70,000 psi weld metal on carbon steel, both feed through the same machine, and both are sold on the same spools — but they behave very differently once the arc strikes. This guide breaks down solid wire (ER70S-6), gas-shielded flux-cored (E71T-1), and self-shielded gasless flux-cored (E71T-11 and E71T-GS) so you can pick the right wire for the metal, the setting, and the budget.
Solid MIG wire, in short
Solid wire is exactly what it sounds like: a single, copper-coated strand of carbon steel with nothing inside it. Because the wire carries no flux, all of the arc protection has to come from a shielding-gas bottle. ER70S-6 (AWS A5.18) is the standard choice — its high manganese and silicon deoxidizers give porosity-free, X-ray-quality welds with a smooth arc, low spatter, and almost no slag to chip. It runs on DC+ (DCEP) with either 100% CO₂ or a 75–80% argon / 20–25% CO₂ blend.
The trade-off is wind. Take a solid-wire gun outside on a breezy day and the shielding gas blows away from the puddle, leaving porosity behind.
Flux-cored wire, in short
Flux-cored wire is a steel tube filled with flux. As it burns, the flux generates its own shielding and forms a slag layer over the bead. That core is what makes flux-cored wire so productive — and it splits into two families:
- Gas-shielded (FCAW-G) — E71T-1 still uses CO₂ or 75/25 Ar/CO₂, but adds flux on top. The result is a smooth, spray-like arc, very high deposition rates, and all-position capability including vertical-up and overhead. It's the production wire for structural steel, shipbuilding, bridges, and heavy plate.
- Self-shielded / gasless (FCAW-S) — E71T-11 and E71T-GS need no bottle at all and run on DCEN (electrode negative). E71T-11 is all-position and multi-pass capable; E71T-GS is a single-pass wire aimed at thin gauge, roughly 18 ga to 1/4".

All four classifications carry a 70,000 psi minimum tensile strength, so the choice is rarely about raw strength — it's about shielding, position, deposition rate, and cleanup.
Which one should you run?
- Indoors, clean steel, welds people will look at → ER70S-6 solid wire. Minimal slag, minimal spatter, best bead appearance.
- Outdoors, on a jobsite, or no gas bottle → E71T-11 or E71T-GS. The flux does the shielding, so wind is no longer the enemy.
- Thick plate, high duty cycle, vertical-up or overhead → E71T-1. Highest deposition rate of the group with a smooth spray-type arc.
- Thin sheet with a small portable machine → E71T-GS in .030" or .035".
- Light rust or mill scale → ER70S-6 tolerates it better than cleaner solid wires thanks to its extra deoxidizers, and flux-cored wires are more forgiving still. Neither replaces proper prep.
Don't forget the running cost
Solid wire is usually the cheapest per pound, but you're also renting or refilling a gas cylinder. Gasless flux-cored wire costs more per pound and there's slag to chip, but there's no bottle, no regulator, and no gas bill — which is why it wins for occasional and field work. For shops running production hours, E71T-1's deposition rate typically pays for itself in arc time. Do I have to change polarity when I switch wires?
