Stainless Solid wire - ER309L

ER309L stainless steel solid wire is a high-alloy filler (AWS A5.9) for joining dissimilar metals — stainless steel to carbon or mild steel — and for buffer and overlay layers. Its extra chromium and nickel tolerate the dilution that occurs in mixed joints, producing crack-resistant, corrosion-resistant welds where a 308L deposit would fall short. Spools in .035" and .045".

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use ER309L for dissimilar metals?
Its higher chromium/nickel content compensates for the carbon-steel dilution in a stainless-to-mild-steel joint, keeping the weld fully austenitic and crack-resistant.

Can ER309L weld a stainless overlay on carbon steel?
Yes — it's commonly used as a buffer/first layer before depositing a corrosion- or wear-resistant overlay.
