Stainless Stick Electrodes - E309L-16
E309L-16 stainless stick electrodes are a high-alloy SMAW rod (AWS A5.4) for joining dissimilar metals — stainless to carbon or mild steel — and for buffer and overlay layers. The extra chromium and nickel handle dilution from the carbon-steel side, keeping the weld austenitic and crack-resistant. Rutile (−16), AC or DC+, all-position; sizes 3/32", 1/8", 5/32".

Frequently Asked Questions
Why use E309L-16 for dissimilar metals?
Its higher alloy content absorbs the carbon-steel dilution when stick-welding stainless to mild steel, preventing cracking and preserving corrosion resistance.
Can E309L-16 weld a stainless overlay?
Yes — it's a common buffer/first layer when cladding carbon steel with stainless.
