Mild Steel - Solid Wire
Mild steel solid MIG/MAG welding wire (GMAW) from HYW Products in copper-coated ER70S-6 and low-alloy ER80S-D2. From general-purpose fabrication to high-strength, code-governed work, you'll find the right diameter and pack here — spools and drums in .023", .030", .035", and .045".
| Wire | AWS | Tensile | Shielding Gas | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ER70S-6 | A5.18 | 70 ksi | 100% CO² or 75–80% Ar/CO² | General-purpose; X-ray welds over light rust & mill scale |
| ER80S-D2 | A5.28 | 80 ksi | 100% CO² or 75–80% Ar/CO² | High-strength low-alloy (0.5% Mo); creep/heat resistance, pressure work |
Both wires run on DC+ (DCEP). The shielding gas changes the arc: 100% CO² gives deeper penetration with more spatter; an Ar/CO² blend runs smoother with less spatter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What shielding gas does ER70S-6 use?
Run it on 100% CO² for deeper penetration (more spatter) or a 75–80% argon / CO² blend for a smoother arc and cleaner welds. Polarity is DC+ (DCEP).
ER80S-D2 vs ER70S-6 — which should I use?
ER70S-6 is the everyday 70 ksi general-purpose wire. ER80S-D2 adds ~0.5% molybdenum for higher 80 ksi strength and creep/elevated-temperature resistance — choose it for high-strength low-alloy steel, boilers, and pressure vessels.
